The mission of the ASCE/AISC Student Steel Bridge Competition (SSBC) is to aid in the educational development of college students through a competition based on real-world scenarios. This competition drives students to apply what they learn in classroom to their own lives through concept design and fabrication, assembly, and testing. The year culminates with an entirely steel structure that is required to meet client specifications and it must also be optimized for performance and economy. The SSBC also increases awareness of actual engineering issues such as spatial constraints, material properties, strength, fabrication and assembly, safety, aesthetics, and cost. Success at this inter-collegiate competition requires effective teamwork and project management skills, which ultimately prepares students for their engineering careers upon graduation.
